2023/24 English Premier League
Matchday 4

Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur

Turf Moor
Burnley, England
Saturday, 2 September 2023
Kick-off is at 16h00

Tottenham will be aiming to continue their unbeaten start under Ange Postecoglou when they travel to Turf Moor to face newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday, September 2.

Spurs sit third in the league standings after picking up seven points from their opening three matches. They began the Postecoglou era with a 2-2 draw at Brentford before recording back-to-back 2-0 wins against Manchester United and Bournemouth.

The Clarets have yet to put any points on the board since gaining promotion back to the top tier of English football as Championship winners.

Vincent Kompany's side were handed the toughest of opening fixtures against defending champions Manchester City, which ended in a 3-0 defeat before they also lost 3-1 at home to Aston Villa.

Burnley have only beaten the Lilywhites three times in 16 Premier League encounters, with their last win coming in the corresponding fixture on 23 February 2022 during the season in which they were relegated.

Lyle Foster made a name for himself when he scored against Villa, having become the first South African to get a Premier League goal in 10 years - a feat last achieved by Steven Pienaar for Everton against Hull in October 2013. The Bafana Bafana international is still getting used to the rigors of English football following his arrival at Turf Moor in January from Westerlo.

James Maddison has settled down quickly in North London after making the switch from relegated Leicester in the off-season. The 26-year-old midfielder went straight into the starting line-up and got off the mark for Spurs with the opener against the Cherries to go alongside his two assists at Brentford.

Kompany was pleased to see Foster kick on after impressing during pre-season and believes the young striker has all the attributes to succeed in the top flight.

"We can't forget his age, he's still fairly young. But he's just continuing what we've seen in the entire pre-season," the Belgian great said.

"He has speed to run in behind, he's strong to hold the ball up and he's able to combine with his team-mates and able to score a goal as well.

"For him we're obviously really pleased, but for the team the reward will be the first time we win a game."

Postecoglou has hailed the impact made by Maddison and feels there is so much more to come from his new signing.

"There wasn't anyone happier than me when we got him. I was delighted. I wouldn't say I'm surprised, but I'm overjoyed at the footballer I've got. The way he's embraced the whole club, where he's at in his life," the Australian said.

"He really wants to be the person. He's that creative force for us. He works hard, he wins the ball back, presses. It's not like he just comes to life when we've got the ball. He's had a disrupted week. He only had one session with us, but for him to put on a performance like that is credit to him.

"And I think there's more to come when he gets more understanding with our forward players and they get more understanding with him. He's going to keep improving. If we got him in the bargain bin, that's great for us."
