The pick of the FA Cup third-round fixtures sees defending champions Manchester United lock horns with record 14-time winners Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, January 12.

The Red Devils pulled off a shock 2-1 win over neighbours Manchester City in the 2023-24 final to lift the trophy for a 13th time, one away from equalling the Gunners' record haul.

United had also reached the final in 2022-23 before suffering a 2-1 defeat to City in the first-ever Manchester derby to decider the title - the ninth time they finished runners-up in the famous competition.

Ruben Amorim's side arrested a three-match losing streak in the Premier League when they held table-topping Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield on January 16.

Arsenal haven't made a final appearance since 2019-20 which saw them beat Chelsea 2-1 and they've contested the trophy 21 times, one less than United.

The North London giants are the Reds' closest challengers in the league, with a 1-1 draw at Brighton on January 4 placing them six points off the summit in second place.

Mikel Arteta's side, who bowed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle last term following a 2-0 loss to Liverpool, are unbeaten in their last 10 top-flight outings.

Arteta lifted the coveted silverware five seasons ago, while he's also won the Community Shield on two occasions and the Spaniard is keen to create more such memories this year.

"Well it's the icing on the cake," he said, referring to his previous trophy wins. "Obviously we work every single day to achieve that, to enjoy it with our people, and there's not a single moment that stands out more than actually when you have that cup and you're offering the cup to your supporters, sharing it with the people that you work every day with.

"They are memories that stick in your mind and hopefully we can create many more. We know as well the level of opposition, but as a club we have to expect to win every year, that's for sure.

"They mean [so much] to all of us. You see how a lot of clubs prepare and decide line-ups. A lot of talk around the cups and how it is right now is very different because to win any trophy in this environment, especially in this country is extremely difficult. I always go as strong as I can!"

Amorim insists he is trying to challenge his players on a daily basis and was pleased to see a reaction from them at Anfield after a poor performance against Newcastle on December 30.

"I am trying that every day, I am trying to push this team every day," the Portuguese said. "Sometimes it is maybe not the best way, because I'm always challenging these players in everything I do, because I feel that we are - not just the players - but everybody in Manchester United is too comfortable.

"So I think we need sometimes a shock. And you can see it today (against Liverpool), we were a different team. It's not about the system, it's the way we face the competition."
