2023/24 English Premier League
Matchday 32
Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur
St James' Park
Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Saturday, 13 April 2024
Kick-off is at 13h30

Tottenham will look to strengthen their position in the top four when they make the long journey to the north-east for a clash with Newcastle at St James' Park on Saturday, April 13 in the lunchtime kick-off.

Spurs climbed back into the UEFA Champions League places after they beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 7 to move above Aston Villa on goal difference with a game in hand.

The Villans had occupied fourth spot for the previous seven rounds, but they dropped to fifth for the first time since February 10 after being held to a 3-3 draw by Brentford at Villa Park on April 6.

Manchester United appear to be well out of the picture as they trail Villa by 11 points in sixth position following a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford on April 7.

The Magpies (8th) are challenging United for European football and trail them by just two points after winning three of their last five games, the most recent of which came against Fulham (1-0) at Craven Cottage on April 6.

West Ham boosted their continental hopes with a 2-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux on April 6 to remain a point ahead of the Tynesiders in seventh place.

In team news, the hosts' injury crisis appears to show no signs of easing up any time soon as they remain without Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Miguel Almiron (all knee), Lewis Miley (back), Callum Wilson (chest), Joelinton (thigh), Valentino Livramento (ankle), Nick Pope (shoulder), Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett (both calf) and Joe Willock (groin). The visitors have far fewer injuries to contend with which sees Fraser Forster (ankle), Ryan Sessegnon (thigh), Manor Solomon and (both knee) ruled out.

Eddie Howe's side had to dig deep to beat the Cottagers after Bruno Guimaraes struck in 81st minute to secure all three points which the manager described as one of their best wins of the season given the amount of first-team regulars missing through injury.

"Sometimes the game can get away from you very quickly but it was a change of attitude for us that made the difference," Howe said.

"We are stretched and there were reasons why we weren't at our best in that opening period but an incredible response. I think it's up there with one of our best wins of the season because of the circumstances."

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou felt they lost control of the game towards the end of the first half, but was delighted to see a reaction from his players in the second half as they fended off the challenge against a team fighting for survival.

"I'm pleased with today. It had a little bit of everything. We started the game well, not just the goal, I thought we controlled the game well," Postecoglou said.

"Then we conceded from a counter-attack which was obviously disappointing. I thought we lost our way a little bit towards the back end of that first half, but a super reaction and the whole second half we were really dominant.

"We played some good football and scored a couple of good goals and created a couple more against a team that is desperate for points and fighting for everything. I guess every team is fighting for something and I thought we handled it really well."
