2024 Olympic Games
Badminton
Porte de la Chapelle Arena
Paris, France
27 July - 5 August 2024
Badminton has only been an official
Olympic event since 1992, but has grown in popularity over the last 32 years and has been dominated by the Asian countries.
China are the most successful team at the Games, winning a total of 47 medals (20 gold, 12 silver, 15 bronze) and they're the only country to triumph in every event of a single tournament which came at London 2012.
Indonesia came out on top in 1992 with five medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and South Korea triumphed in 1996 with four medals (2 gold, 2 silver), but China have ruled the roost since 2000.
China have the most participants at Paris 2024 (16), four more than the next highest-competing teams of Japan and South Korea.
Tokyo 2020 singles women's champion Chen Yufei is back to defend her title along with Huang Dongping, who won gold in the mixed doubles last time out, although she has a new partner this time around in Feng Yanzhe.
Chen won her opening match against Germany's Yvonne Li by two sets to one and revealed how she has been coping with the pressure of performing at the Games this year.
"This Olympics I just want to enjoy the journey ... in Tokyo there wasn't an audience so, for me, this feels like a real Olympics," Chen said afterwards.
"There are many young people in this sport who need to learn to be happy. From what I eat, to what I wear, to how I feel about the weather, I do everything I can to take care of myself."
Denmark's Viktor Axelsen won the gold medal in the men's singles three years ago and he kicked off his title defence with a straight sets victory over Nepal's Prince Dahal.
"It feels amazing," Axelsen said. "Last time there was no spectators and to play in an arena like this, such a beautiful arena. So many supporters on day one - amazing, and I'm so thankful for this experience.
"To be honest right now, I just want to get home. It's very late, get something to eat and then tomorrow I have a day off so I can prepare well for the next challenge. I'm just very, very happy to have started here."
