2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers

Group D

Ethiopia v Malawi

Estádio do Zimpeto
Maputo, Mozambique
Tuesday, June 20
Kick-off is at 16h00

Ethiopia will lock horns with Malawi in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Estádio do Zimpeto on June 20.

Current Form

The Walia Ibex remain winless in Group D with their ambitions of qualifying for the AFCON finals having faded away - recording one win and three defeats.

Ethiopia lost to Guinea in their last home game in the qualifiers and the defeat ended their four-match unbeaten run in the competition as the hosts.

Meanwhile, Malawi are winless in their last three Group L games, but they still have a chance of qualifying for the AFCON finals despite having recorded one win and three defeats.

The Flames have been bad travelers in the qualifiers having registered one win in their last five away games while the other four games ended in a defeat.

Key Players

Shimelis Bekele - who is Ethiopia's influential captain and attacking midfielder - has netted 13 goals from 78 international matches and he will be keen to inspire his troops to a win.

With Frank Mhango missing due to an injury, Malawi will look to the imposing Richard Mbulu with the Iraq-based centre forward having netted five goals in 38 international matches.

What was said?

“That was a good game and I am very happy with the progress of the team," Malawi head coach Patrick Mabedi said after their recent friendly match against Mozambique.

"We have not been playing together and we have to understand that Mozambique have been playing together but we matched them and we were even better in terms of tactical and technical awareness.

“Football is like fixing the road,  the rain will mess up and you have to fix it again. We still need to work on certain areas and know how we conceded the goal but we have learned. We need to improve our game day by day."

Head-To-Head

The two teams have met 13 times across all competitions with Malawi having won four games compared to Ethiopia's three victories and six games ended in a draw,

The Flames beat Walia Ibex 2-1 in their last meeting which was a 2023 AFCON qualifier played in Lilongwe, Malawi in June 2022.
