2026 World Cup qualifier
CAF Group H
Equatorial Guinea v Malawi
Estadio de Malabo
Malabo, Equatorial Guinea
Monday, 10 June 2024
Kick-off is at 15h00
Malawi will be looking to keep pace with Group H leaders Tunisia when they take on Equatorial Guinea in a
2026 World Cup qualifier at the Estadio de Malabo on Monday, June 10.
The Flames returned to winning ways as they beat Sao Tome and Principe 3-1 in Lilongwe on June 6, having succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Eagles of Carthage on matchday 2.
Patrick Mabedi's side occupy fourth place in the group on six points, but they have the chance to leapfrog Liberia and Namibia into second spot with victory in Malabo.
A positive result on matchday 4 will take them within a point of Tunisia and Mabedi intends to take the fight to the National Thunder despite being the away team.
"We know that Equatorial Guinea is a better side than us. And now they are hungry for points after losing those six points due to the FIFA decision," the 50-year-old tactician said.
"But my boys are here on a mission to compete and get results and we are looking forward to winning this game. Much as we respect our opponents, we do not fear them.
"We have told the boys to be on top of their game and attack and not sit back defending like how most teams do when they are playing away.
"The six points that we have now are history and even the boys know that this is a new game and we need to concentrate without looking at how we have performed this far."
Equatorial Guinea have seen their qualification hopes dashed by FIFA's decision to deem Emilio Nsue ineligible for their opening two group games against Namibia and Liberia after he scored the winner in both encounters.
Juan Micha's side were forced to forfeit the two 1-0 wins and find themselves in fifth position following a 1-0 loss to the Eagles of Carthage on June 5 which has left them without a single point.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two nations and one that could have a massive bearing on their respective qualifying campaigns.
