Matchday 11

Fulham v Manchester United

Craven Cottage
London, England
Saturday, 4 November 2023
Kick-off is at 14h30

Manchester United will be looking to put their derby disappointment behind them when they face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, November 4 in the lunchtime kick-off.

The Red Devils were poor in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford on October 29, which halted a run of two successive wins in the Premier League.

A fifth loss of the season left Erik ten Hag's side 11 points behind league leaders Tottenham in eighth position as they lost ground on the seven teams above them in the table.

Brighton (7th) and Newcastle (6th) both drew to go a point clear of United, while Aston Villa (5th) beat Luton 3-1 to stay in touch with the top four.

The Cottagers slipped to 14th place as they extended their winless run to two matches with a 1-1 draw against the Seagulls at the Amex.

Marco Silva's side are tied with Crystal Palace (13th), Wolves (12th) and Chelsea (11th) on 12 points, three adrift of United and seven clear of the relegation zone.

Alex Iwobi has yet to register a goal or an assist for Fulham since making the switch from Everton on transfer deadline day, but he put in a hard-working performance against Albion last time out and won the ball back which led to the equaliser from Joao Palhinha. The Nigerian played the full 90 minutes for the first time in what was only his second start for his new club.

Andre Onana has come in for criticism after committing a couple of high-profile errors for the Red Devils, but he was their best player against City and pulled off a superb save at point-blank range to deny Erling Haaland his hat-trick. The Cameroon goalkeeper will be seeking just his third clean sheet of the campaign in the English capital after shipping 16 goals in 10 appearances.

Silva wants Palhinha to be more vocal on the pitch as he has all the other attributes to become a leader in the team.

"He leads by his attitude," the Portuguese tactician said. "He is not the most vocal guy, he keeps improving his English as well, as I want him to be more vocal, to lead.

"I want to see Joao doing it more, it's important he keeps improving his English, to be more vocal on the pitch, because he has all the other things - his attitude, his commitment, the way he leads by the attitude, the way he lifts the others around him as well.

"Those moments where we lose the ball, his defensive reaction is impressive. We want to be able to take the best from him in these moments, and in all the other moments we want him to keep improving."

Ten Hag has urged United to move on from the derby setback, although he felt they performed well in the first half after trailing to Erling Haaland's contentious penalty at the break.

"Last year we were in the same situation, also after the game against City," the Dutchman said. "We have to forget this game and recover... We have played three times this year against City.

"We played very good in all those games. First half today was good, we made it difficult for them. The chances were similar and they got the first goal. We played three games well against them."
