2024/25 English Premier League
Matchday 9
Arsenal v Liverpool
Emirates Stadium
London, England
Sunday, 27 October 2024
Kick-off is at 18h30

Arsenal will be hard-pressed to get back on the winning trail when Premier League leaders Liverpool visit the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, October 27.

The Gunners saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on October 19, having played for an hour with just 10 men following the 30th-minute dismissal of William Saliba.

Mikel Arteta's side had also dropped points against title rivals Manchester City on September 22 and find themselves four off the league summit in third place.

The Citizens set a new club record of 31 games unbeaten in the top flight after they beat Wolves 2-1 at Molineux on October 20 to remain a point behind the Reds, who claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield later that same day.

The North Londoners will be buoyed by their recent home record against the Merseyside giants, having won the corresponding fixture in each of the last two seasons.

However, Arne Slot's side have come out on top in their last four matches since Nottingham Forest halted their perfect start to the campaign on September 14.

In team news,  Saliba is suspended for the hosts and joins Martin Odegaard (ankle), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) and Kieran Tierney (thigh) on the sidelines. Neto is expected to return after being ineligible to face his parent club, while the fitness of Jurrien Timber and Bukayo Saka (thigh) is still being assessed. Alisson (thigh) and Harvey Elliott (ankle) remain unavailable for the visitors, but Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota (chest) could be in contention to feature.

Arteta admitted his team made life really difficult for themselves once more when Saliba received his marching orders on the half-hour mark against the Cherries, which was already their third red card of the season.

"A very sad evening, very disappointed with the result, it was a really tough context again," the Spaniard said.

"It's hard enough to play here 11 against 11, we made life very difficult for ourselves again, playing for 60-70 minutes with 10 men but I cannot fault the effort of the players, how much they wanted, how much they tried.

"But in this league, it's the third time it's happened in eight games, it's just an accident waiting to happen, it's too difficult."

Slot hailed an industrious display against the Blues, but felt his team could have won by more than just the one goal after being denied a penalty by VAR in stoppage time when Curtis Jones went down under a challenge from Robert Sanchez, who got to the ball first.

"The most important thing if you want a chance of winning a game like this is you work so hard, as we did," the Dutchman said. "We created a few very good chances and we were, in my opinion, a bit unlucky with some decisions being made.

"It could have been a crucial decision to overturn the referee decision on the pitch, which I couldn't understand. Then there was the decision of the red card, which I saw [for Arsenal] was a red card.

"For us, it's very good we've made a bit of a gap to Chelsea because by the end of the season they will be in and about [the top positions of the league]."
