2023/24 English Premier League
Matchday 6

Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur

Emirates Stadium
London, England
Sunday, 24 September 2023
Kick-off is at 15h00

Ange Postecoglou will get his first taste of one of the fiercest rivalries in English football when Arsenal and Tottenham lock horns in the 194th North London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 24.

Postecoglou has made a bright start to his tenure at Spurs, recording four games on the trot after overseeing a 2-2 draw with Burnley on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The Lilywhites came from a goal down to beat Sheffield United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 16 to remain second in the standings, two points behind league leaders Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta's side kept pace with their title rivals as they edged Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park the following day to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2023-24 campaign in fourth position, level on 13 points with their arch-rivals and Liverpool (3rd).

Spurs enjoyed a resurgence in this fixture under Mauricio Pochettino, losing just three times during his five-year spell, but the Gunners have won four of their last five meetings.

The derby almost always produces goals and you have to go all the way back to 8 February 2009 for the last time that neither team managed to get on the scoresheet.

Bukayo Saka has been directly involved in four of Arsenal's nine league goals this season, getting off the mark against Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend and also scoring in the 2-2 draw with Fulham. The England winger picked out Leandro Trossard with a lovely cutback for the Belgian to bag the winner on Merseyside last time out.

James Maddison has already made a telling impact at Spurs following his arrival from Leicester in the off-season. The attacking midfielder registered two assists on his league debut at Brentford before scoring in successive games against Bournemouth and Burnley. He was a constant threat against the Blades last time out, but wasn't able to get name on the scoresheet for the third game running.

Arteta was relieved to end a six-year run without a win at Goodison Park, where he spent six and a half seasons as a player before making the switch to Arsenal in 2011.

"Six years without a win here is a long time, so we had to learn some lessons, we had to be better. I am delighted for the win but especially the way we won it, the way we played, how dominant we were, the presence that we showed on the pitch. We fully deserved to win the game," the Spaniard said.

"It's a special place for me, obviously I have a big emotional attachment for this club and I am extremely grateful for the time I had here. I want the best for them except for when we play against them, and today we are fortunate that we won the game."

Postecoglou was delighted to see a reaction from his players after going behind to a suckerpunch from Gustavo Hamer on 73 minutes as Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski scored deep into stoppage time to send the home fans into pandemonium.

"It was great to see the players react. It was a difficult game. There just seemed to be a lot of dead time, a lot of stoppages, no great flow. For the most part we handled it okay. There were times when we got frustrated," he told SPURSPLAY.

"It's something that we're going to have to cope with but, particularly after we went 1-0 down, I really liked the way the boys went about it. We stayed calm, clear-headed and worked our way into the game in a really good way considering all the chaos that was happening."
