Zach Johnson will be keen to ensure that the US retains the
Ryder Cup when they tee off at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.
What to know about Johnson
The American star became the 30th US Captain in February 2022 - replacing Steve Stricker who had led the team to the Ryder Cup triumph in 2021.
Johnson posted an 8-7-2 overall match record and was part of winning Ryder Cup efforts as a player in 2016 and as a Vice Captain in 2021.
The Iowa-born golfer's two Major Championships, in the 2007 Masters and the 2015 Open, highlight 12 career worldwide victories.
The long wait
The last time Team US won the Ryder Cup on foreign soil was in 1993 with the event being held in England at The Belfry in Wishaw, Warwickshire, near Sutton Coldfield.
They won a second consecutive Ryder Cup, by a margin of 15 to 13 points and the Americans are now looking to end their 30-year wait for a win in Europe.
Why Team US could win Ryder Cup
Johnson served as vice-captain of Team US when they clinched the Ryder Cup in 2021 and knows what it takes to win the tournament.
They also have arguably the best player in the world in their team - Scottie Scheffler who is placed at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Furthermore, Johnson has mentioned that Tiger Woods, seen by many as the greatest player of all time - the 'king of golf', has a peripheral influence on the US Team.
What was said?
"The European teams have been very stout, very good, very deep, and this year is no different. It's just difficult. I know what history says. I'm very aware of that," Johnson said.
"But at the same time I can speak confidently, and talking to my team, these guys are ready and want to embrace that difficulty and want to just look at this as a great opportunity.
"The teams of the past are teams of the part. This is a new team with a new opportunity."
